Issues with browser edition resetting Google settings

Hello,

We have been using the Chrome Browser edition for 3 kiosks at the
same location for approximately six years. Recently, the startup URLs
we programmed have stopped working correctly; they frequently reset to
the Google homepage.

I have manually corrected this setting several times, but it continues
to reset every few days. Could you please provide assistance in
resolving this issue?

I never had to use a profile before but I tried creating and signing in with a profile. It seemed to work but a couple of days later

This is a result of forced Chrome updates.

Common Workarounds (Non-Enterprise Users)

These are popular in 2025–2026 guides and forums but aren't permanent —

Chrome/Google can sometimes bypass or repair them after major updates, restarts, or background processes.

Disable Google Update Services (easiest quick method)Press Win + R → type services.msc → Enter.
Find Google Update Service (gupdate) and Google Update Service (gupdatem).
For each: Right-click → Properties → Startup type: Disabled → Stop the service if running → OK.
This stops the background update checks in most cases.

Rename or Block the Update Folder/ExecutableGo to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Update (or C:\Program Files\Google\Update on some installs).
Rename GoogleUpdate.exe to something like GoogleUpdate_old.exe (or add an extra underscore/extension).

Optionally rename the whole Update folder.
Some users also set folder permissions to deny write/execute for SYSTEM and your user account.

Block via Task SchedulerOpen Task Scheduler (taskschd.msc).
Look under Task Scheduler Library → GoogleUpdate.
Disable or delete tasks like GoogleUpdateTaskMachineCore / User S-1-5-... etc.
